Auto-Tag Untagged Resources

Automatically tag untagged resources with CostCenter=Unallocated to identify resources missing cost allocation tags.

Overview

Untagged resources make it difficult to track costs and allocate spending to the correct departments, projects, or teams. TagOps can automatically identify and tag untagged resources with CostCenter=Unallocated, helping you identify resources that need proper cost allocation tagging.

What TagOps Can Do

TagOps can automatically tag untagged resources to improve cost visibility:

  • Automatic Detection: TagOps rules can detect resources that are missing specific tags (e.g., CostCenter, Department, Project) and automatically apply default tags
  • Default Tagging: Automatically apply CostCenter: Unallocated to resources that don't have a CostCenter tag, making it easy to identify untagged resources in cost reports
  • Comprehensive Coverage: TagOps scans discover all resources across your accounts and regions, ensuring no resource goes untagged
  • Cost Visibility: Tag untagged resources so they appear in cost allocation reports, making it easier to identify and remediate resources missing proper tags
  • Remediation Workflow: Use the CostCenter: Unallocated tag to identify resources that need proper tagging, then create TagOps rules to apply appropriate tags based on resource characteristics

Example TagOps Rule

Create a TagOps rule to automatically tag untagged resources:

  • Condition: Resource does not have tag CostCenter
  • Action: Add tag CostCenter: Unallocated

TagOps will automatically apply this tag to all resources missing the CostCenter tag. You can then use AWS Cost Explorer or other cost management tools to filter by CostCenter=Unallocated to identify resources that need proper cost allocation tagging.
